Join the studio

Thanks for your interest in joining our studio. Please take a minute to read this before applying…

This is for a full-time position, only available in our office in Hastings on Hudson, NY (outside of New York City). If you’re interested in distance work, please check out our freelancer page.

What we do here: We’re opening the door for a new generation of leaders. We’re rebuilding how learning is done–more than 10,000 people have taken one of our online workshops and we’re eager to help even more people level up.

Our workshops include the altMBA, The Marketing Seminar, The Bootstrapper’s Workshop and the Podcasting Fellowship. We’ve also had more than 50,000 students in our Udemy courses.

We have students in more than 44 countries, with nearly 100 alumni who act as coaches, leading peer-to-peer within each of our workshops. All of this is coordinated by a tiny staff of four people, each of whom do ten different jobs every day.

Consider joining us!

In most job listings in our industrialized culture, the conversation goes like this:
COMPANY: We need people to do a job where they deliver x, y and z under certain conditions.
APPLICANT: I can do that. That’s what I’ve always wanted to do. That’s who I am.

In the traditional model, it’s the worker’s responsibility to adapt yourself to the available slot. The org chart has boxes on it and your job is to fit into the box. This can lead to a lot of discomfort, fibbing and ultimately, a poor fit. A studio job isn’t like that, though. In a studio, the mission comes first, personalities and talents come next, and then the jobs follow.

Here’s a riff on working in a studio.

As a result, I can’t tell you a specific job title or even a salary. All of our jobs pay significantly higher than industry standards, with excellent benefits (including lunch every day), flex time and most of all, an environment that’s based on mutual respect, responsibility and alacrity. We eagerly seek diversity of background and skill set, and are also focused on alignment of attitude and energy.

Right now, we’re in search of people who can do work that looks like project management, team leadership, student engagement, digital analytics, business development, special events, facility with tech and web tools, and most especially, etc. We do a lot of etcetera.

Here’s how we work: We seek opportunities to make things better. We organize people, or tasks, and we make promises to each other. We take responsibility without demanding authority. We learn what we don’t know and then we do things with care and generosity. We eagerly share our mistakes and expose the speed bumps, and then we turn around and we do it again.

That means we speak up when we don’t understand and when something can be better. These conversations are a feature, not a bug.

We don’t have meetings. We don’t have a hierarchical org chart. We engage often, 1:1 and on Slack. We move very fast. Mostly, we create projects.

It’s easy for a company to say that this is what they do, but at scale, sooner or later, it turns into a factory. For good reason. It’s really hard to run a studio at scale.

We’re not at scale. And proud of it!

Some of the people I’ve worked with over the years include Amit Gupta, Willie Jackson, Michael LandauMegan Casey, Michelle Welsch, Ishita Gupta, Jerry Shereshewsky, Michael Parrish DudellHarper Reed, Corey Brown and dozens of other really extraordinary alumni that we’re not also listing here mostly because I’ve added too many links already. We’re proud of each of them.

The application process is a bit different than you might be used to. If it’s not a good fit, we totally get it. We’re not for everyone, and everyone isn’t for us.

The posture of possibility drives the person we’re seeking. You don’t want to fill a box, you want a role where you can see opportunities to contribute. You’re earned the slot because you’ve done the work long before today.

And today’s the day to make sure you’re showing your work online.

The first step is to figure out if you truly want the responsibility, pathfinding/ambiguity and internal visibility that comes from a gig like this. If you do, drop us a note via this form. Please write up to six paragraphs, with no attachments, giving us an overview of where you are and where you’re going. If you’re not looking for a job, this just might be the job you’re looking for. [And if nothing else, now you have a good reason to build a page about your work.]

If we’re off to a good start, we’ll hook you up with a more detailed application and then go from there.

While it might be tempting to demonstrate zeal or hustle by using a different method to get on our radar, please don’t. This method is the best and only way to reach out to us.

Thanks for checking this out. Looking forward to making a ruckus.
